Santa Margarita Stakes Horse Racing

ARCADIA, Calif. — Zenyatta’s owners brought her back to the races so they could have some fun and the fans could enjoy the mare who loves putting on a show.

She delivered on both counts Saturday, when Zenyatta won the $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap by 1 1/4 lengths, extending her career victory streak to 15-0.

“Everybody really loves her,” co-owner Jerry Moss said. “Everybody’s so pleased to have her back and to root for her, and when she wins, she makes everybody happy.”

The 6-year-old mare trailed a field of seven rivals going 1 1-8 miles in her season debut before unleashing her trademark late run to win under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

Turn your clocks forward Sunday morning. But Daylight Saving Time will cost you, according to one study.
Once a year, Americans all over the country turn their clocks forward one hour — an annual ritual called Daylight Saving Time that’s supposed to save them money by using less energy.
Except it doesn’t. The move to Daylight Saving actually used 1 percent more electricity than if people stuck to Standard Time, according to a 2008 study or residents in Indiana. In other areas of the United States, the time change could cost people even more.

The debate over whether Daylight Saving Time saves money or not has raged since Ben Franklin argued that clock-changing would take advantage of more natural daylight and save candles.

(Reuters) – A bipartisan financial regulation reform bill could still be worked out in the Senate, despite a breakdown in negotiations, key Republicans said in a letter obtained by Reuters on Saturday.

The entire Republican membership of the Senate Banking Committee wrote to its Democratic chairman that they remain open to working out an agreement, but they want sufficient time to consider a new bill he plans to release soon.

The letter signaled that regulatory reform — a top Obama administration priority — might still be attainable in the Senate, despite a surprise collapse on Thursday in talks between committee Chairman Christopher Dodd and Republicans.

Glee Tickets

The tour, which will feature cast members performing some of the best-known songs from the show, hasn’t added any new cities, but it has tacked on extra shows in Los Angeles and New York. The new dates are a response to what “Glee” producer 20th Century Fox TV calls “overwhelming” demand for tickets.

The new shows are a matinee and an evening performance on May 22 in Los Angeles and a May 29 matinee and May 30 evening show in New York.

BANGKOK — Thousands of red-shirted protesters surging into the Thai capital from impoverished rural areas Saturday gave the government an ultimatum to “return power to the people” or face mass marches in key locations.

Traffic was light, businesses were shuttered and social events canceled in Bangkok as many feared the four-day demonstrations that begin Sunday would repeat past violence. But protesters stressed they would use only peaceful means in their quest for new elections.

Chicago St Patrick s Day Parade

The Taoiseach has begun a five-day official visit to the US.

The visit will culminate with a St Patrick’s Day meeting in the Oval Office at the White House with US President Barack Obama.

Yesterday evening, Brian Cowen arrived in Chicago where he attended the Irish Fellowship annual St Patrick’s dinner.

Today, he will be one of the main guests at Chicago’s St Patrick’s Day parade, traditionally one of the biggest held in the US.

Top male and female elites, Spain’s Eneko Llanos and the UK’s Julie Dibens, made history in the UAE’s capital as they clinched the maiden US$250,000 Abu Dhabi International Triathlon in emphatic fashion.

Llanos came from behind to win the 223kms ADIT – which is organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) – after beating a host of world favourites to finish with a combined time of 6h34m37 – nearly a minute ahead of second placed Dirk Bockel from Luxemburg. Whilst Dibens – the current Ironman 70.3 and Xterra Triathlon World Champion and 70.3 distance world record holder – dominated to clinch a wire-to-wire victory in the female category, her longest ever race.

Kate Snow

ABC’s Good Morning America weekend anchor Kate Snow is leaving the network and joining NBC. The news was first reported by TVNewser.

It is the latest change at Good Morning America since Diane Sawyer left to become World News anchor.

Snow joins the network as a correspondent for Dateline and will “contribute to the newsmagazine and other NBC News properties,” according to the release.

MANAMA: Germany’s Sebastian Vettel put returning compatriot Michael Schumacher in the shade on Saturday with pole position for Red Bull at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Schumacher, the seven times champion returning at the age of 41 after a three-year absence, qualified seventh for Mercedes.

Britain’s world champion Jenson Button will be alongside the former Ferrari ace in eighth place after just sneaking his McLaren into the final phase of qualifying.
